The Maasvlakte 2 is an extension of the Maaskvlakte harbour and industrial area of the Port of Rotterdam. The recently completed artificial peninsula is dominated by powerful contrasts: nature and industry, leisure and labour, vast wasteland and dense industrial use. Next to its function as harbour and transportation hub it is also an energy landscape, emphasized by the presence of an E.ON coal power plant, several high-voltage transmission lines and many wind turbines.
The site selected for the technology demonstration is the terrain A, a triangular-shaped large field at the South end of the Maasvlakte 2, next to the Slufter. The Slufter building situated on the neighboring dike, is used as visitors center for the event. Equipped with a large meeting area and an auditorium for 50 persons, this facility is ideal for welcoming the arriving guests, to provide printed information material and to give the presentations. Following this first part of the event, the guests are invited to visit the kite power system live in action at the nearby demonstration area.
