The flight of the kite is controlled by a control unit, that is hanging under the kite. It is connected to the kite with four lines. Two are used for steering, and the other two to change the lift of the kite (powering and depowering). Two micro-winches pull at the lines. They can be controlled manually with an RC control unit or automatically, using a control computer and a second wireless link.

The picture shows the kite control unit, that was developed in cooperation with two Frisian companies in 2010. It has a waterproof casing and a total weight of about 5 kg. The nominal power of the motors is 100W each, but they can easily deliver 300W peak power. In average, the whole unit consumes less than 50W.
